The map

The map shows every current event EHW knows about. Each marker is one event, coloured by its category. Nearby events group together until you zoom in. Click a marker for its details, or click a country for its country panel.

Filters

The filter sidebar sits on the left. On a phone, it opens from the tab on the left edge.

  • Time window: 1 hour, 6 hours, 24 hours, 72 hours, 7 days, 30 days or everything held.
  • Severity: all events, or only those scoring at least 20, 40, 60 or 80 out of 100.
  • Categories: turn individual kinds of event on or off.

Layers

Layers add context under the events. All of them are off until you turn them on.

Strategic layers

Chokepoints, shipping lanes, nuclear sites, and military bases are grouped as strategic layers. They stay hidden until you reveal them.

Sharing a view

The map's address can carry a whole view, so a link opens the map exactly as you left it. Every parameter is optional:

https://rift.news/?lat=35.5&lon=138.2&zoom=5&time=7d&layers=fires,radar&country=JPN
  • time is one of 1h, 6h, 24h, 72h, 7d, 30d, all.
  • layers is the full set to show, from fires, weather, outages, ships, faultlines, faultlines_minor, supervolcanoes, radar, sst, risk, military.
  • country is an ISO 3166 alpha-3 code, and opens that country's panel.
  • ?q=flood opens the map with that search already run.

Embedding the map

Another site can show the live map inside its own page. Use the address /embed with the same lat, lon, zoom, time and layers parameters:

<iframe src="https://rift.news/embed?lat=53.5&lon=-113.5&zoom=6" width="100%" height="480" style="border:0" title="Live hazard map"></iframe>

The embedded map has no panels. Tapping an event opens it on Rift in a new tab, and tapping a group of events zooms in. Only /embed may be shown inside another site; every other page refuses.
