Push notifications

EHW can send a notification to your browser or phone when a serious event matches rules you set. No account is needed. Alerts are sent to free and paying readers at the same moment.

Turning them on

Open the alerts panel and choose what to be told about:

  • Where: a country, or near me within 10, 25, 50, 100 or 250 km. The default is 50 km.
  • How severe: all act-worthy events, severe and above (50+), or extreme only (70+).
  • What kind: any of eight groups of event.
  • Quiet hours: a window with no notifications. You can let the most severe events (90+) through anyway.

On an iPhone or iPad, first add EHW to your Home Screen. Apple only delivers web notifications to an app on the Home Screen.

What is sent

Only act-worthy events are sent. To keep notifications meaningful:

  • at most one per category every 15 minutes
  • at most 10 an hour
  • the same event is not sent twice within 6 hours, unless it escalates to a higher severity band

What is stored

Your rules and your browser's push address are stored on the server, tied to that browser and nothing else. A "near me" point is rounded to about 1 km before it is saved. The privacy policy has the details.

A notification is a pointer, not a warning in its own right. Use it to look, then follow your local authorities.
